Top 3 Ammunition Alternatives

Amid news that there’s a shortage of ammunition in the US (specifically .22 300-, .303 and .243 caliber shells) it may be time to think of some alternatives.

Regarding rumors Homeland Security has stockpiled ammunition, the NRA has clarified in fact government purchase are down in the last three years. In fact it is due to increased demand, rising raw material and labor costs, and tighter gun control. So, here is our list of viable alternatives for this year’s empty handed subsistence hunters:

Rock Salt

Owing to their large bore size, shotguns can load all sorts of unique ammo you wouldn’t normally find on smaller-caliber weapons like rifles or handguns. And if you’re a Tarantino fan, you probably remember the scene in Kill Bill Vol. 2 where Bud blows the Bride away with a shell full of rock salt. Turns out, Tarantino didn’t completely make that up.

Used as something of a poor man’s rubber bullets, rock salt slugs were designed to scare off trespassers—it was a stronger warning than foul language, and not as much overkill as live ammunition. And from the ballistic tests we’ve seen, the idea makes sense. Rock salt is brittle enough to shatter at close range without breaking skin, but it’ll still hurt. Of course, given that you have to hand-load the salt yourself, and the shotgun’s barrel has to be cleaned right away afterward to avoid corrosion, it’s not very practical. On the other hand, it’s the perfect ammo to stockpile if you’re expecting an invasion from giant alien snails.

Homing Bullets

liamneeson

Over at the Sandia National Laboratories, engineers have developed a “smart” bullet, which is expected to hit targets out to a range of 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) with Duke Togo levels of accuracy. The bullet is equipped with an optical sensor that controls a set of miniature fins near the bullet’s tail end. Once a target is “painted” by the laser and the bullet leaves the barrel, the sensor tracks the laser dot, sending signals to the fins to keep it on course and land it within 20 centimeters (7.9 in) of the target.

As far as targeting is concerned, it is a miniature Tomahawk cruise missile, a pocket-sized Liam Neeson that will look for, find, and kill anything within a mile.

Dragon’s Breath

Not all bullets are designed to shoot people with. Some, like the Dragon’s Breath ammo for shotguns, look more like somebody’s way of indulging their inner child (or pyromaniac).

The round uses a magnesium-based ammo that, when fired, triggers gout of flame that can get as long as 30 meters (100 ft). It looks absolutely awesome on a dark night, and it’s guaranteed to make that next home invader wish he brought an extra pair of pants, as long as the shooter remembers not to burn down his home.

bullet coppercladsteelstrip11

If you’re looking for a solution to the shortage however, look no further. Shanghai Metal manufactures the Copper Clad Steel used to make bullets. Copper clad means both sides of the carbon steel are covered with T2 copper. This is a novel alloy material which can be used in a variety of applications.  To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, Facebook and Instagram. Thor’s Hammer: The Science

Thor’s hammer isn’t real, unless you believe recent Swedish news that Thor’s hammer has been found in Stockholm. No, only in the hearts and minds of comic book and movie fans does it exist. But, assuming it did, would anyone be able to lift it?

thors hammer1

Legend says only the worthy can lift it, and depending on which source you read, it’s made from a dying star. If that is the case, then it would have to weigh as much as a herd of 300-billion elephants according to Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you’re wondering, the average weight of a male African bush elephant is a bit more than 12,000 pounds, so about 4.6 trillion metric tons. Watch a video by Vsauce3 which nicely explains the concept:

If we were to follow the legend that Thor’s hammer was made from metal from Asgard, it would only weighed 42.3 pounds. That is far less than 4.6 trillion metric tons.

ThorHammer4

Most likely if it was made from existing metals it would be made of carbon steel.  Die steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools. Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness).

carbondiesteelforhammers

Shanghai Metal manufactures the carbon steel in hammers. Die Steel is mainly used for manufacture of cold-work dies with high abrasive resistance and small shock load. SMC is delighted to provide wide range of alloy steel to the customers; we also accept customizations according to your requirements. Become Bullet Proof …Using Water

In most movies, the superhero escapes certain death by simply jumping into water. Or if he’s Aqua Man: go back home. But would that actually save him from someone shooting at him? The answer is yes and no. Myth Busters found the answers.

bulletwater1

It depends on the bullet, and how fast it goes. Paradoxically, the slower the bullet, the deeper it can go. The reason for this is because of the force at which it hits the water. If it hits hard enough, the bullet will shatter and become harmless. But if it is going slow enough, it will continue through the water at speeds fast enough to penetrate human flesh.

Refraction

Supersonic bullets, up to .50-caliber, disintegrate in less than three feet of water, while pistol rounds need up to eight feet to become non lethal. Shotguns slugs require even deeper water. While these are the technical measurements, in most actual situations the bullet would enter the water at an angle, reducing the amount of water necessary to make it non-lethal. This is shown in the refraction picture here.

Copper

Shanghai Metal manufactures the Copper Clad Steel used to make bullets. Copper clad means both side of carbon steel is covered with T2 copper. Team Building Exercises – A New Spin

Have you had the chance to go to a team building exercise? They vary worldwide. In Japan one worker described one team building exercise named ‘naked relationships’:

“After showering and washing your hair in a group facility, you sit in the bath (which is a natural hot spring) together and talk and bond. The idea is that when you are naked, everyone is equal and you will feel free to discuss things and joke about things that you wouldn’t in the office setting.”

Another worker recalls  their team building experience,

“We had to go around the room and tell each other what we didn’t like about each other. We might have also had to add what we did like about each other but I honestly only remember the criticisms and the people bursting into tears. We went from simply not being able to work together to actively disliking each other in about 30 minutes. Then we ate a boxed lunch and ended the day by filling out personality tests”

Well next time you could try something a little different – and become an army tank driver. There’s an organization in England that does team building events for corporations where you pretend you’re in the army and drive tanks.

tank

Did you know that the reason why tanks are called “tanks” is because while the British were developing the first tank, they were hiding it underneath tarps and referred to it as a “tank” to maybe confuse the enemy about what this new contraption really was. They were hoping they’d think it was a water tank or some other innocuous device.

By face hardening steel, armies found that the harder face of steel would cause milder steel and iron projectiles to shatter when they struck it. This meant that the steel couldn’t be penetrated easily by a single round.  Even multiple rounds might still shatter, depending on their size. All because of the way the face hardened steel behaved.

How Much Petrol Costs Internationally

petrol1“Finland has produced so many brilliant distance runners because back home it costs $2.50 a gallon for gas.”  Esa Tikkannen, 1979

“It’s better to have beer in hand than gas in tank.” Unknown

Some people would say petrol prices are one of the highest outgoings from their budget – but this isn’t the case universally. So what causes this?

The differences in gas prices across countries are due to the various taxes and subsidies for gasoline.  All countries have access to the same petroleum prices in international markets, but then decide to impose different taxes. In some cases, like Venezuela, the government even subsidises gasoline and therefore people there pay close to nothing to drive their cars.

Petrol2

So, assuming you have a 60 liter car, the cost of one tank will vary considerably.  A tank of petrol in Venezuela would buy you a candy bar ($0.60). A tank of petrol in Norway, the most expensive on the list, would get you a weekend holiday ($153). In China you could get an IPod ($81). In the UK you could get a family trip to the capital ($129). And finally in the USA, you could get dinner for two in a mid range restaurant ($58).

600x600xapp1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Qt2kqR1gPZ

In fact production of gas is relatively the same universally. The crude oil, which is a mixture of hundreds of liquids of different boiling points is put into a huge column and heated from the bottom. The liquids with the lowest boiling points rise up the column and are collected from the upper regions. Other liquids are collected part way down and heavy oils are collected from the bottom. Tar is found to collect at the base of the column. Petrol is one of the low boiling liquids that are collected near the top. So in fact savings could be made from more efficient production processes, like updating their equipment.

Do Oil Discoveries Cause Conflict?

The conspiracy theorists will surely agree that oil and conflict is closely correlated – but do the statistics back it up? Economists have attempted to quantitative describe the relationship between discoveries of large oil fields and the probability of conflict.

war

Dube and Vargas studied this effect in Colombia and found that due to the concentration of oil profits being with the owners, extortion and kidnapping for ransom increased accordingly. This was described as a rapacity effect where it was in fact the money, not the oil that attracted conflicts.

colombia

Micheals found after conducting a worldwide regression that oil that it is actually the opposite –the increased wealth and opportunities from building the oil refinery actually decreased crime, as the potential criminals were less economically incentivized to commit crimes. The assumption that oil causes conflict stems from the anomaly that conflicts that arise due to suspected oil reserves rather than actual ones.

money

So in fact the building of oil drills and refineries can be beneficial to the surrounding areas, and the assumption they hurt an area was suggested to be untrue.

Shanghai Metal manufactures Salvage tools for oil drilling similar to those mentioned. To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, Facebook and Instagram. Or you could try our new mobile app by scanning our QR code.

Should We All Switch To Cycling?

bike1

Whether it’s to boost your fitness, health or bank balance, or as an environmental choice, taking up cycling could be one of the best decisions you ever make. Not convinced? Here are some of the benefits:

happy

You’ll get there faster

Sleep more deeply

Look younger

Boost your bowels

Increase your brain power

Beat illness

Live longer

Save the planet

Avoid pollution

So do we have you convinced? Great! So now it’s time to buy a bike – but which one?

bike3

There are two types – carbon or steel frames. The carbon versus steel argument really boils down to is durability. You’re shelling out a significant chunk of change for a bike. This is a bike you will be riding every single day (optimistically) and racing a few weekends per month (even more optimistically). If you have a finite amount of money like most normal people in this world, you want a bike that can deliver durability and reliability to last as long as possible, so at a minimum, when you’re done with it, you can sell it to someone else with a clean conscience knowing it will provide the next owner years of enjoyment.

bike4

Shanghai Metal manufactures the steel wire used to make bicycle wheels with advanced processing facilities ensure its long-lasting life. To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, and Facebook. Or you could try our new mobile app by scanning our QR code.
